Top-Rated AC Repair Houston Expert: How Does An Air Conditioner Work?

#1 Houston AC Repair Company: Understanding The Basics Of An Air Conditioning System

While you are sitting inside in your cool and comfortable house, have you ever wondered how your air conditioner actually works? In the simplest terms, it is through a chemical known as a refrigerant. This chemical travels throughout the house and outdoors while removing hot air with cool air. The refrigerant will cool the air as it reenters the home and the cycle begins all over again. This aids in the process of having better overall indoor air quality. If you want to understand a fundamental breakdown of the way a residential and commercial air conditioning system works keep on reading.

1. The Parts Of An Air Conditioning

Almost all air conditioning systems consist of four parts a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device, and an evaporator. The evaporator is found within the home as this is where the refrigerant will evaporate. Fans that are located inside of the home will blow the air across the evaporator’s coils. As air from the home travels across the evaporator, the refrigerant that is in the coils will pick up the temperature from the air. The refrigerant absorbs the heat found in the air and will turn it from liquid to vapor. It goes from being a cool liquid to a hot vapor and as the heat is removed the air goes from warm to cool. Ac repair Houston specialists always emphasis the parts of the ac because if you can understand the anatomy you can more easily understand how everything functions.

2. How Air Conditioning Works

A vaporized refrigerant will pass through a compressor which is typically found outside of the air conditioning unit next to the home along with a condenser. The compressors the main job is to compress the gas into a state of high pressure and high temperature. From this point, the hot pressurized gas will flow to a third component, the condenser. It is at this junction that the gas will be condensed back to a liquid state while the heat is radiated away. An outdoor unit will have metal fins to help remove the heat at a quicker pace. The liquid that has fully cooled off is now ready to return into the home. The expansion device will regulate the flow of the liquid refrigerant into an evaporator, where once again it absorbs the key and changes from a liquid to a low-pressure gas.

3. Moisture Trap Found In An A/C

While we typically consider an air conditioner to simply just remove heat from the home, it does much more than that. Its other job is to condition the air. AC repair Houston experts say that it is always smart to understand aspects of the ac in your home in case you may need repair services. Humidity is one of the main factors of how we feel he, the more you made a room or the environment is, the less we are able to sweat and remove the unwanted body. In order for a home or business to feel more comfortable, and the air conditioner must be able to dehumidify the air and surroundings. Is there moves from the evaporator coil, the coil will absorb not only the heat but moisture as well? You now have air that is going to be much cooler and drier when it comes out of the vents and is able to make a room comfortable. The water that is rung out of the air by an air conditioner may collect or drain out of the unit on highly you middays. Almost all modern air conditioners today are able to control humidity levels indoors. In fact, it was Willis Carrier who drew up the original plans for this type of design way back in 1902. He designed the first unit not to cool the room but to control the humidity levels. The cooling of the room was an added benefit at the time. It would take almost 60 years or America to truly embrace the benefits of an air conditioner. Before that, air-conditioners were truly a luxury item and not available to everyone.

Houston AC Repair: Why Is My Air Conditioning System Not Cooling?

AC Repair Houston: Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Is Not Keeping You Cool

Do you have an air conditioner running in your home, yet the air is not truly cool? Maybe it is blowing out warm or just plain hot air. There are several things that may be wrong with your A/C if it is not working properly. Below you are going to find the solutions to some very easy fixes that may help you to get it running properly and what can only be fixed by a professional.

Easy Air Conditioner Problems That You Can Fix

Problem 1: Thermostat Mistakes

Do you have an A/C that blows cold air at times and lukewarm other times? This may be due to the fan setting being switched to “ON”, which is going to cause the fan to run all the time, even when the air is not being cooled by the unit. Easy Solution: Simply ensure that the thermostat is set to work on “AUTO”.

Problem 2: Air Filter Issues

A dirty air filter is going to reduce the amount of air flow in the unit, which can cause several problems. First, the unit is going to struggle to circulate the correct amount of air that is needed to bring the house to the desired temperature. In addition, the evaporator coil is going to freeze up and air will not be able to circulate at all, meaning you get almost zero cool air. Solution: Take the air filter out and examine it to see if it needs a cleaning. If you are indeed having issues with your residential air conditioner, contact an ac repair Houston professional today.

Problem 3: Dirty Unit

The way an air conditioner cools a house is a rather simple process. The evaporator takes hot air in and transfers it to the outside unit known as the condenser. However, if the condenser is dirty or covered, it is not going to be able to dissipate that heat correctly. This causes the unit to overwork and not be able to cool the home properly. Solution: Gently clean the outside of the unit with a garden hose, clearing off the debris. It is important that you do not spray the unit with the hose on the highest setting as this may bend the fins that allow airflow to the condenser. While you are outside, be sure to remove all tall weeds and leaves away from the unit. You want your unit to have the ability to breathe on those hot summer days too! A clean and well-maintenanced air conditioner will bring about better indoor air quality.

Problems Only An AC Repair Houston Expert Can Solve

There are going to be problems that only a ac repair Houston professional can take on, these are just a few of them.

Problem 1: Broken Or Faulty Condenser Fan Motor

If the init’s fan has gone bad, there is no way that it can dissipate heat, which simply means you are not going to get any cold air.

Problem 2: Low Refrigerant

The refrigerant that is found in the unit is the key ingredient to absorbing the heat from the air. When there is not enough refrigerant in the unit, it is not going to be able to cool the air. If you do have low refrigerant it more than likely means you have a leak. Some typical signs that you have a leak include:

  • Ice found on the outside of the unit and refrigerant line.
  • A hissing or bubbling noise coming from the unit.
  • The unit can not cool the home on hot sunny days but is able to work fine in the evening or on cool days.

If you see any of these signs, it is time to turn the unit and call an ac repair Houston professional as soon as possible. When you run the unit in this state, it is possible to damage the unit beyond any possible repair.

Problem 3: Faulty Compressor

The compressor of your unit is the heart of the system, it is the part that circulates the refrigerant through the unit and helps to cool it. If this part is damaged, the unit is going to be unable to cool the house. If the compressor is damaged, it is going to need to be replaced. However, this can be a rather expensive process. If you do not have a warranty on the unit, it may be best to simply replace the unit at this point.

#1 Air Conditioner Repair Houston Expert: How Often Should An A/C Be Replaced?

A Guide On How Often Your AC Needs To Get Replaced By A Top Air Conditioner Repair Houston Professional

One of the hardest decisions for any homeowner to make is when it’s time to get a new air conditioner or repair it. While a new air conditioner can be rather expensive, in many cases it is the best decision. However, knowing when it is time to get a new air conditioner can be difficult to understand. Below are six signs that are going to help you make the right decision. We understand that deciding whether you should replace or repair an air conditioner is difficult. There are many times when an old AC still has many years of life in it and does not need to be replaced, that will surely reduce ac costs along with smart ac controllers that can better monitor old and new ac systems to understand how much you’re using. This guide was written to help you save money and make the best decision possible. So, let’s get right down to the nitty-gritty and find out whether you need to repair or replace your air conditioner.

Over A Decade Old Air Conditioner

In many cases, the typical lifespan of a well-maintained air conditioner is about 15 years. However, if your air conditioner is 10 years old and needs extensive repairs, is more than likely best to replace it. This is especially true when you look at all the advances that have been made in air conditioning technology within the last few years. If your AC is this old then it is time to reach out to your #1 source for air conditioning maintenance and repair services in Houston.

An AC That Is Inefficient

If the air conditioner you are using right now has a low SEER rating, it is costing you more to run it than it is worth. New air conditioners on the market today must have a rating of at least a 13. If the air conditioner in your home or business has a SEER rating that is under 13, by replacing with a new air conditioner you are going to cut your energy costs dramatically.

Extensive A/C Repairs

If the unit that is being worked on has an extensive repair last, it is best to weigh the costs of replacing it when looking for an ac repair contractor. If the amount to repair an older unit would cover the vast majority of a new unit, it is typically going to make more sense financially to invest in a newer unit.

AC Is Constantly Breaking Down

Do you have an air conditioner that seems to break down every other week or month? Do you know the air conditioner repairman by the first name? This probably means your air conditioner is breaking down more often than it should. These types of repair bills are going to add up really quick, and it makes no sense to keep a unit in this condition. We recommend remain in friends with your air conditioner repairman, but letting the unit go.

A/C R 22 Freon

Freon is one of those chemicals that has been slowly phased out by the federal government in an effort to conserve energy across the nation. Due to this phaseout, the cost of Freon has risen exponentially over the years. If you are using an air conditioner that runs on Freon, it is going to have to be replaced eventually. If your air-conditioner is giving you major troubles and it uses Freon, is simply just a good idea to purchase a new unit.

Air Conditioner Is Not Cooling Your Home

Does it feel that your home is almost as warm as it is outside? This is a problem with an air conditioner system that is not running as efficiently as it should. It also may be an incorrect size were simply too old to function as it should. If your air conditioner is not able to keep your home cool, it is time to replace it with the unit that can. Indoor air quality is very important.

If you have any questions about whether you should replace or repair your air conditioner system, called the best air conditioner repair Houston has to offer today! AC Man of Houston offers air conditioner financing. There is no sense to continue to use air conditioner split systems that are not efficient and are not able to cool your house down correctly. However, there are those times when an older unit still has several years of life left in it. This is why it is essential to contact AC Man Of Houston today and let us observe your unit and give you the best advice we possibly can. Give us a call.

The #1 AC Repair Company In Houston Shows You How To Turn Off The Power To Your Air Conditioning System

Top-Rated AC Repair Company: How to Shut Off the Power to Your Air Conditioner

When you are repairing your air conditioner or installing a new unit, you must turn off the power to the unit. Turning off the power not only protects you from getting shocked, but it also protects the equipment from power surges that can damage the unit. Before turning off the power, you need to turn off the heating and cooling system by turning off the thermostat. If you are considering changing out your thermostat to a new Nest thermostat, you will want to ensure that the power is completely off for your thermostat and your heating and cooling system. If you are unsure how to install a new thermostat, install a new heating and cooling unit or repair your existing system, an AC repair company can help.

Switches That Control The Cooling And Heating System

You will need to determine which switches control the heating and cooling system in your house. Most of the time, these are found in your breaker box or fuse box; however, many units will have a separate breaker box located outside next to your heating and cooling system. It is important to know that if you have a split heating and cooling system, there may be a switch, fuse or breaker for the heating system and a separate switch, fuse or breaker for the cooling system.

Breaker Box

Most of the time your breaker box will be labeled. If your breaker box is labeled, you can flip the breakers for your heating and cooling system. If your breaker box is not labeled, you can either try to find the breakers that control your heating and cooling system or simply shut off the main breaker. If you opt to shut off the main breaker, you should be aware that it will turn off all power to your home. If you shut off only the breakers to your heating and cooling system, verify that all power to the heating and cooling system is turned off by attempting to turn on the heat setting, the cool setting and the fan of the system by using your thermostat.

Switches May Look Like A Breaker Box

Certain heating and cooling systems will not have a breaker in the breaker box. Instead, it will have a separate small breaker box located near the heating and cooling system. These stand-alone switches may look like a breaker box, or they can look like a light switch. If there is a switch similar to a light switch near your heating and cooling system that does not control a light, switch it off to ensure power to your heating and cooling system is off. Once you have installed your new Nest thermostat, you will need to turn the power back on. If you shut off the main breaker to your house, you will need to reset all of your electronic devices and clocks. The Five Installation Steps to Follow After Installing a New Thermostat

  • Step 1 – Turn off your heating and cooling system at the thermostat. Slide the lever to the off position. Doing this will prevent your thermostat from turning on when you turn the circuit breaker on.
  • Step 2 – Go to your circuit breaker box. Your circuit breaker box can be in several locations, such as the garage, the basement, your laundry room, in a closet or on the exterior of your home.
  • Step 3 – Reset the circuit breaker for your heating and air system. Find the breakers that are marked heating and cooling and move them to the on position. If the breaker is in the neutral position, you will need to turn the breaker off and then back on.
  • Step 4 -Wait 30 minutes. Your heating and air system must have time to reset the internal circuit breaker.
  • Step 5- Turn the thermostat to cool and begin enjoying your new Nest thermostat. If your breaker trips when you turn your thermostat on, you may have another issue. Try resetting the circuit breaker. Call for immediate assistance. If this does not work, contact your local AC repair company.

The #1 A/C Repairman: When It Comes Time To Buy A New Air Conditioner For Your Home

An Expert AC Repairman Decides It Is Time For A New Residential Air Conditioner

Trying to stay comfortable during the heat of the summer is practically impossible without an air conditioner. This is especially true in parts of the country like Texas where the combination of high temperatures and excessive humidity can make it miserable outside. As one of Houston’s leading air-conditioning providers, we are committed to helping our customers stay cool. Whether that means helping them select the right air conditioner for their home or keeping their current equipment in tip-top shape, our qualified technicians can help. From dealing with repairs and maintenance to replacing existing air-conditioning systems, we have the knowledge and experience to do the job right. When you hire an AC repairman from our company, you can be sure that your home’s air conditioning system will keep you cool all summer long.

Deciding If You Need A New Air Conditioner

Air-conditioning units usually are quite expensive. Because of that, it is important to make sure that you really need a new unit before you invest your money. If you are experiencing problems with your current unit, it can be hard to decide when the time is right to upgrade to a new model.

Save Money In The Long Run

Even though a new air conditioner is a major expense, it may wind up saving you money in the long run. If your current unit is malfunctioning, you may find yourself continually paying to have it repaired. In this case, buying a new unit could eliminate those repair expenses. Oftentimes, it makes more sense to upgrade to a new model rather than paying to repair the same unit over and over again. You may even find that the cost of a new unit is less than you would have paid for repairs. This is one situation where it makes a lot more sense to buy a new air conditioner rather than struggling along with an older unit that keeps breaking down. If you want to hire an AC repairman, ask if they offer financing.

Lower Your Energy Bills

Another way that a new air-conditioning unit can help you save is by lowering your energy bills. Modern air conditioners are far more energy-efficient than those of the past. When you install one of these newer units in your home, you may find that your monthly cooling costs drop significantly. In fact, your new air conditioner may even be able to pay for itself over time through the money that you save on your utility bills.

No Need To Go Without Air Conditioning

Anyone who has ever spent a summer in Texas can tell you that summers are hot. If your air-conditioning unit breaks down during the heat of summer, it could be a while before you can get it repaired. In the meantime, you may find yourself without air conditioning. This can be a miserable situation. When you have a brand-new air-conditioning unit, however, the chances of it breaking down are far slimmer. That means that you don’t have to worry about dealing with an extremely hot house while you wait to have your unit repaired.

A Smarter Solution

In many cases, the smartest solution is to buy a new air conditioner rather than continuing to struggle with an older unit. If you are thinking about upgrading, contact us today. One of our technicians can come to your home and evaluate its layout. Based on their findings, they can then help you find the perfect air conditioner for your needs.

Knowing When Your AC Filter Should Be Replaced

What You Should Know About Your Air Filter

Whether it’s an AC system in your home or car, the chances are you’ve had to change the air filter. Air filters trap dust and other types of allergens from circulating in the air of your home. If you live in Houston, then you know how hot it gets and the last thing you want is to breathe in such things. With that said, let’s discuss how air filters work and how you can keep them working for a longtime to come.

AC Man Houston | Replace Your Houston AC FilterHow They Work

Air filters do a lot of things. Most filters sit right between a cardboard frame and they were made with spun fiberglass. Filters play a role in keeping your air clean because it filters the dirty air that your HVAC unit brings in.

Particles such as animal fur, dust, pollen, bacteria and mold spores become trap by the fiberglass material. However, you do need to change it regularly. Doing this will ensure the air stays as clean as possible and free of particles such as the ones previously mentioned.

Maintaining Your Air Filter

Allergens and other particles will make their way into your home if an air filter is dirty. Not only that, but free air flow from your HVAC system may become restricted. This can increase energy bills due to the unit not working as efficiently as it should be working.

All you have to do is replace the filter or clean it. Don’t forget to check the filter once per month so you can either clean or change it. As a general rule of thumb, you should see light pass through the filter if you hold it up to a light.

Air Filter Issues

There are various issues that can be due to a clogged air filter. Your unit may not be working as good as it did in the best or the evaporator coils may be frozen. These things can be due to a filter that has to be changed.

It’s important that you understand your HVAC equipment. This can help you figure out what issues your unit has early on, which can save you money. If you need HVAC repair, Houston residents can rely on AC Man Houston. Contact us today or call AC Man Houston with any questions you have about your HVAC system.

How Your Thermostat May Affect Your HVAC Unit

Parts of HVAC 101: The Thermostat

Your home has a mechanism that you use to control the temperature inside. This mechanism is called a thermostat, and you are probably familiar with using it. You set it to the desired temperature and enjoy greater comfort in your home. Let’s talk about how the thermostat works, what common problems there are and how you can make sure to have it work smoothly.

AC Man Houston | Houston AC MaintenanceHow A Thermostat Works

A thermostat keeps constant temperatures going inside your home. Once you set it to the temperature you want it at, it will make use of either the heater or the air conditioner to get the home to that precise temperature. It has a sensor that picks up the exact temperature of the room. When it picks up the current temperature it switches on or off like a light switch to get the heater or the air conditioner to get the room to the exact temperature desired.

Today’s thermostats are made with smart technology. This type of technology allows the thermostat to learn the heating or cooling patterns in the home. It learns how long it takes to get to a specified temperature making it more of an automated process to keep the home at the greatest level of comfort at all times. These smart thermostats also work to use energy efficiently, so your heating and cooling bills are always more affordable.

Thermostat Problems

Common thermostat problems include the following:

No Display

If the thermostat fails to display the temperature it could be that the breaker has tripped or that the battery is dead. Remove the cover and see if any dirt has built up or if there are loose wires or screws.

Temperature Does Not Change

When this happens, you want to check the thermostat for any dirt build up or a stuck anticipator. The heat anticipator signals the unit to turn on. If neither dirt nor the anticipator is the problem, see if the thermostat is receiving direct sunlight. This could be skewing the readout.

Thermostat Runs Constantly

If your air or heater are running all the time, the thermostat has a problem that should be looked at by HVAC maintenance Houston professionals. The problem could be the heat anticipator

Maintaining A Thermostat

Keep your thermostat clean and be sure that power is getting through the system. Dirt can cause several problems but all it takes is a gentle dusting every now and again to maintain the unit. Also, make certain that the thermostat is not facing direct sunlight. This can make your system operate at less than efficient levels. It can also make your home very uncomfortable.

If you still have problems with your thermostat, contact a professional HVAC company. A technician from the company can inspect the thermostat and find the problem. AC Man Houston is here to serve the area and will do both repairs and maintenance to make your HVAC system work perfectly. Schedule an appointment today and keep your air conditioner and heater in excellent shape.

How To Tell If Your Heater Is In Need Of Maintenance Or Repair

Is Your Heater Making These Noises? You May Need Professional Repairs!

Loud, strange noises suddenly coming from your heater can be incredibly worrying. Without fail, hearing something of that nature means that some sort of problem has presented itself. In some cases, you may be able to resolve the matter yourself, but otherwise, you’ll need the aid of an HVAC repair expert.

To determine whether you need heater repair in Houston, follow along with the guide on common furnace problems below:

AC Man Houston | AC Noises in Houston TX1 – Whistling

Whistling furnaces are most commonly associated with duct problems. Your furnace needs sufficient airflow at all times. If your ducts aren’t doing the job, you may need to replace them with larger models.

Before doing so, however, you need to check for any gaps in the ductwork. Duct gaps – particularly where the duct actually joins the furnace – are another common cause for furnace whistling. You should also make sure you don’t have a clogged filter, especially if the problem seems to have developed out of nowhere. A quick, simple test is to simply remove the filter to see if the whistling ceases.

2 – Rattling

Rattling is often a result of a loose duct. You should try reinforcing them with duct tape or extra screws. You can even try adding rubber pads or cork material under the furnace. If you need help lifting it up, a pry bar from your local hardware store will do the trick.

3 – Bouncing

If it sounds as if your furnace is bouncing, you likely have worn bearings. Naturally, you’ll need to replace them. In this instance, your best bet is to work with an HVAC professional.

4 – Banging

Banging sounds that seem to startup as soon as the furnace comes on are generally related to a number of potential issues. Check to see if you can determine exactly where the sound is coming from. If the ducts seem to be the issue, this is likely due to fluctuation that happens when the pressure inside them changes. Check for weak spots and screw on an additional piece of metal for more support.

On the other hand, you could also be looking at a possible problem with your gas-ignition. In this scenario, you might hear something that sounds like a small explosion when the furnace ignites. If you notice that the flame seems to change or doors shaking on the furnace, that’s generally a tell-tale sign. Of course, an issue of that level needs to be handled by a professional.

5 – Squeaking

Squeaking sounds coming from the furnace usually signify that the metal panning or ducts aren’t secure. You can repair this quite easily yourself. Simply reinforce, rehang, or replace the affected parts.

If you aren’t confident that you can fix a problem with your furnace yourself, that’s potentially for the best. You should always play it safe and work with a specialist to be sure that the job is done. When it comes to the local heater repair in Houston in particular, you can always rely upon AC Man Houston in particular. Choosing The Right HVAC System For Your Home

Learn More About The Four Main HVAC Systems On The Market

If you are looking for a new HVAC system, you have quite a job ahead of you. There are a few ways you can choose one that is right for you; for example, the layout of your home and the weather in your area can play a role in your decision. The following information briefly reviews four different HVAC systems and discusses the benefits of each.

1. Ductless Split Systems

Ductless split systems serve a very specific purpose; they are useful in homes without ductwork or for rooms that are being added onto an existing structure. They feature an interior fan and an exterior heat pump or air conditioner. The system works well and you can have zone climate control if you’d like. However, ductless split systems do not work well in areas where it is very cold.

2. Standard Split Systems

Standard split systems are flexible, as they can be arranged in a few different ways. For example, there is a hybrid/dual fuel option, a furnace and air conditioning option and a heat pump split system option. This type of HVAC system is relatively inexpensive, and as such, it is one that a lot of people utilize. Another benefit is that pieces of the system can be replaced relatively easily; there is no need to alter the ductwork or other elements within the unit.

3. Geothermal HVAC Systems

Geothermal HVAC systems are expensive, especially compared with the other options on this list. However, they save money over time because they are energy efficient. Geothermal systems utilize underground/underwater pipes, which assist them in keeping temperatures regulated.

4. Packaged Systems

A packaged system is placed within a large cabinet that is kept on the exterior of the home. The benefit to this setup is that there is less noise on the interior of the home. However, the system is not as durable and does not work as efficiently as other systems. Typically, packaged systems are used as a last resort.

Regardless of which option you choose, you will spend quite a bit of money on your HVAC system. If you want to make sure you get the best HVAC services in Houston, it is in your best interests to speak to a professional in the industry by contacting us today or calling AC Man Houston!

The Affects Heavy Rainfall Has On Your AC Unit

HVAC Maintenance in Houston – What Rain Can Do to Your AC

When the rainy season hits, flowers and allergies are in full bloom. More rainfall can spell trouble for your outdoor air conditioning system. You might be worried what damage the rains can do to your AC, but luckily most owners will have no real reason to be concerned.

Rain and a Heating/Cooling System

Every air conditioner is made up of electrical parts. When these parts get exposed to the elements every day, they continue to function. This is because AC systems have been designed to hold up to all kinds of weather even heavy rains. Most of the delicate, electric components are sealed under a metal housing which keeps them safe. During most normal rainstorms, homeowners will not have to worry about the AC getting damaged.

AC Man Houston | Rainfall Affects Your Houston ACWhat About Floods?

Outdoor AC systems can hold up to rainwater but floods are different. AC systems cannot be protected by their housings from any amount of flood waters even if only exposed to them for a few hours. Floods that go above 15 inches are a major concern. Storms that are accompanied by high winds can also potentially be a concern because the debris kicked up by the winds can harm the AC unit.

What to Do

If you can cover your AC unit before a heavy rain, this will shield it from the wind and shallow flood waters. Make sure the cover is made of a breathable material that will fit your AC’s housing. Plastic or tarp should be avoided because condensation can occur when they are placed over the AC. This allows mildew to grow. Covering your AC is not required, but it is recommended.
